13 Things To Do Around Syracuse This Semester

Happy Syracuse Saturday!!

Move-In day is officially less than a week away. Actually, it’s way less than a week away.

I’m not quite sure how that is possible, because I’m positive that just last week I was filling Lizzie Maguire goodie bags for my sixth birthday party.

Yet, somehow, in a few days, we’ll following in the footsteps of these 1988 Oranges…

Add 28 years, a flat screen tv, and a shirt, and the situations will be nearly identical!

Over the past week, I’ve consistently fallen in and out of fits of hysteria while dramatically bidding friends, “farewell” and desperately trying to fit four cable-knit sweaters into a side pocket of a suitcase. Nonetheless, I’m beyond excited to get this party started. This semester is going to be a number of things- thrilling, scary, exciting, trying, fun, and much more; I cannot wait!

I think the best way to get to know a place is to live as the locals live…and buying a pair of Sorels and hand warmers doesn’t count. So, I’ve put together a list of things that Central New Yorkers love to do, and that we’ll have the chance to check out in t-3 days!

T MINUS THREE DAYS. Oh, no, here come the tears.

  1. The Great New York State Fair.

Come on, ya’ll- let’s “Find Our Great” at the New York State Fair. For just $10, it’s the perfect way to get to know Syracuse, meet new people, and stuff yourself with scrumptious eats!! Also, do you really have anything better to do on the weekend of move-in?

2. Hot Air Balloon Rides!

Awesome, right? Imagine how astounding Syracuse fall foliage must be from above. The rides are on the pricey side, so be prepared to splurge a bit, but the experience will make it all worth it.

3.  Florida Georgia Line!

H.O.L.Y smokes, this concert is going to be amazing. Get tickets to see FGL on  Sep 2 at the Lakeview Amphitheater before they’re all gone!

4.  Syracuse University vs. Colgate

I’ve been waiting all day for Friday night! Unfortunately, you’ll have to choose between watching Florida Georgia Line and watching SU play against (*beat cough, cough*) Colgate at our football season opener!

5. OttoTHON

We’ll get to dance the day and night away at this year’s OttoTHON on November 6th. How can you pass up 12 hours of dancing for kids? Ya just can’t.

Jonna Herbstritt, left, and Gene Brethorst, both 17 years-old and from Waconia, sit atop their friends car while they watch the Expendables III at the Vali-Hi drive in theater in Lake Elmo, on Wednesday, August 20, 2014. (Pioneer Press: John Autey)

6. Midway Drive-In

This is a perfect late-summer date idea, and can be just as fun with a big group of friends. Be sure to bring blankets and snacks for when the sun sets and grumbling tummies come out.

7. Lafayette Apple Festival

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, right? So let’s keep the doctor away for a long, long time by eating a million and one apples on October 8th and 9th, at the LaFayette Apple Festival! Apple pie, apple dumpling, apple turnover, and apple cider donut lovers welcome!

8. Gorge Jumping in Ithaca

C’mon, ya have to do it at least once. The drive from Cuse to Ithaca is only an hour and the gorges are just too gorgeous to miss (I had to). While you’re there, check out all the amazing dining options Ithaca has to offer. Moosewood is an absolute favorite.

9. Zip-lining

I’m trying to squeeze in as many outdoor activities as I can before those Cuse temperatures plummet and I find myself squeezing seven sweaters under my coat. Zip-lining through Syracuse mountains is a must-do.

10. Syracuse Irish Festival

Think live music, delicious food, impressive step dancing, and an astounding amount of readily available Guinness. Yep, I’ll see you there.

11. Weekly Farmer’s Market

This place is literally an eight minute drive from campus, has an endless supply of fresh produce and goodies, and should not be missed. It’s a Farmer’s Market on Thursdays and Saturdays, and a flea market on Sundays! Shop til ya drop, ya’ll.

12. “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”

It’s time to head into a little time warp and experience this movie the way our parents did…in real life! Head to the Palace Theatre on October 30th with toast, umbrellas, and an awesome costume if you decide to head to the post-show costume party.

13. Apple Picking, of course!

  1. Question- is it really Autumn if you don’t go apple picking with friends,in flannel and denim attire? Probably not. And if you don’t take a cute apple-holding pic to post, will anyone even know that fall happened? Nope. Therefore, you must check out Abbotts Farm, Beak & Skiff, Behling Orchards and get ready to sip cider and smile for Snapchat!

Let’s start doin, Syracusian!
